PAINT AROUND YOUR NAILS WITH PVA SCHOOL GLUE

Paint a thin layer of non toxic PVA glue around your nails and wait for it to dry before you start painting your nails. This way if you make any mistakes and go over your skin instead of the nail, you can peel the glue off and easily remove the polish from your skin.

ROLL THE BOTTLE INSTEAD OF SHAKING IT

Usually the instructions on the bottle say to shake well before use. But to mix the polish you should actually roll your bottle, not shake it.

Shaking your nail polish causes trapped air instead the bottle, creating tiny pockets. Roll the bottle gently in the palms of your hands like your rolling play dough instead to avoid bubbles in your polish.

LOOSEN THE LID BY SOAKING IT IN HOT WATER

If the lid of your nail polish bottle is stiff, try soaking it in hot water for a few minutes to loosen it.

WRAP A BOBBLE AROUND THE LID FOR EASIER GRIP

If you’re still struggling to open it, wrap a bobble around the lid. This will make it easier for you to grip onto and open the bottle.

ONLY DO THREE STROKES PER NAIL

To easily get the perfect nail, you only need to do three strokes with brush.

Start in the centre and add a small blob of nail varnish with the brush near the cuticle. Push the blob back to the cuticle, then all the way up the centre of the nail.

Then paint from the centre of the bottom of the nail round the edge of the nail on the left and up to the tip. Then repeat on the right side of the nail.

DO THIN COATS, NOT THICK

It’s always better to do multiple thin coats rather than one big thick coat, or your nails wont dry. If you need to add a second coat to brighten the colour, make sure it’s thin so it dries easily.

USE TAPE OR STICKERS AS STENCILS

If you’re after a cute pattern on your nails, don’t go free hand. To make sure your design is consisted, use stickers or tape as a stencil and thinly paint over it. Then wait a few minutes for the polish to dry and peel it off for a simple but neat pattern.

PAINT YOUR DESIGN ON GREASE PROOF PAPER

If you want a more complicated nail design, it can be really hard to replicate the pattern on your non dominant hand.

Paint your designs on grease proof paper and wait for it to dry. You can easily peel the designs off and fix them to your nail instead of fumbling to do a perfect heart with your left hand!

USE A COCKTAIL STICK TO PLACE GEMS

If you’re trying to add gems, fingers or tweezers might be too large and you will end up with nails full of finger prints and tweezer indents.

Use a cocktail stick to carefully place the gems on your nail. It’s so small it wont disrupt the rest of your beautiful nail design.

USE A SMALL BRUSH TO NEATEN UP

Even with a perfect polish application technique, the brushes can be quite large and you may miss patches or go over onto the skin.

Neaten your nails by using a smaller brush; you can use an old lipstick brush, a smaller nail varnish brush or a mini paintbrush. Just make sure it’s small so you can clean up the places a larger brush couldn’t. You can either dip the small brush in the nail polish to add to places you’ve missed, or in nail polish remover to erase mistakes.

SOAK YOUR FINGERTIPS IN ICE WATER

One of the worst parts of painting your own nails is waiting for them to dry. But wait no more!

After painting your nails, when they’re starting to dry put your fingertips in a bowl of ice cold water (if you don’t have ice just go for cold) and leave for a few minutes. The cold water will make your nails dry much faster than normal. When the water starts to bead on your nails it means they’re dry and you can take them out.

SPREAD VASELINE AROUND THE TOP OF THE BOTTLE

Having dry flaking nail polish all around the neck of the bottle makes it harder to open the next time you use it. Plus the dry bits can fall in, resulting in not-so-smooth polish next time.

Once you’ve finished your nails, make sure to wipe any nail polish around the neck off the bottle off so it doesn’t harden. And to make sure the lid doesn’t stick, add some Vaseline around the top on the outside of the bottle.

STORE UPRIGHT

There’s nothing worse than going to paint your nails and finding your favourite colour upside down and leaking all over your nail polish box.

Store your polishes upright and neatly in a box, so next time there’s no annoying spillages for you to deal with.

ADD COLOURED STICKERS ON THE LIDS

To make finding your favourite colour amongst a sea of different shades easier, add colours to the top of your polish on the lids to indicate the colour of the polish. That way you can see what colour it is straight away, without even lifting the bottle.

You can either use coloured stickers to give a rough idea of the polish, or if you’ve got fifty shades going on you can make your own stickers from the varnish. Just paint a dot on grease proof paper, wait for the dot to try and glue onto the lid so you can see what exact colour it is without lifting a finger.
