COCONUT OIL HAIR HACKS
COCONUT OIL HAIR HACKS 1: HAIR GROWTH
Full of vitamins and fatty acids that are essential to hair health, coconut oil can be used to help it grow strong. And whilst applying it directly to the scalp won’t actually make your hair grow any faster, using it as part of a scalp massage will.
Scalp massages improve circulation and stimulate blood flow to the scalp, which will make your hair grow faster. And as coconut oil has anti-inflammatory properties, it can also help to combat any inflammation that’s preventing your hair from growing as fast as possible.
Try using a bit of coconut oil as part of a scalp massage for extra hair growth help.
COCONUT OIL HAIR HACKS 2: UNTANGLING HAIR
The wind, playing with your hair and just general living can leave it in a tangled mess. But before you’re tempted to drag a brush through your mane, grab some coconut oil.
Brushing your hair can result in unnecessary damage if you’re rough on it. For gentle untangling, add some coconut oil to the lengths of your hair and leave on for a few minutes before you start brushing or combing it. The oil will mean the strands glide over each other, making it easier to remove the knots.
You can also add coconut oil to your brush or comb so it glides through your hair (cause the stuck-brush-look ain’t a good one).
COCONUT OIL HAIR HACKS 3: A DEEP CONDITIONING TREATMENT
Coconut oil is perfect as a natural conditioning treatment. This is because it’s made up of fatty acids, meaning it has great moisturising properties. In particular it contains lauric acid, which strengthens and moisturises the hair.
Because these are smaller medium-chain acids that have a unique molecular structure, they can easily penetrate the hair strands quickly. Hair is hollow, and once the coconut oil has entered the hair shaft, it conditions the hair from within.
For a deep conditioner that lasts, try applying coconut oil to the lengths of your hair and leaving it sit for half an hour before washing it out. Just be sure to use shampoo to thoroughly remove it or you’ll be a walking grease ball!
COCONUT OIL HAIR HACKS 4: GET RID OFF DANDRUFF
For a flake free scalp, you need coconut oil. The fatty acids in it have antibacterial and anti fungal properties, meaning it can target fungus and bacteria on your scalp and prevent future problems. And as coconut oil is so moisturising, it won’t dry your scalp out like other dandruff treatments available.
It’s important to remember however that coconut oil is quite comedogenic, meaning it can block pores (including the ones on your scalp). So use sparingly and if your scalp starts to get inflamed, stop immediately.
COCONUT OIL HAIR HACKS 5: REMOVE HEAD LICE
Whilst coconut oil itself might not remove head lice, it can be mixed with anise or tee tree oil to remove lice without irritation. Plus coconut oil makes the hair slippery, making it easier to comb out the lice.
COCONUT OIL HAIR HACKS 6: STYLING
Using heat tools like curling irons and blow dryers can steal the moisture from your hair. As we already know, coconut oil has great moisturising properties. So you can use it as a styling product to not only tame frizz, but to protect hair from heat damage. It will help to make your hair smooth, shiny and sleek.
COCONUT OIL HAIR HACKS 7: PROTECT FROM SUN DAMAGE
Repeated sun exposure can damage the outside of the hair strands, resulting in dry brittle hair that looses its colour.
With an SPF of 8, coconut oil can even protect your hair from sun damage. Just apply to ends or lengths as a leave-in treatment to make sure your hair stays protected for a sunny day at the beach!
COCONUT OIL HAIR HACKS 8: COLOUR YOUR HAIR
This hack isn’t well known, but coconut oil can actually be used in combination with natural dyes to colour your hair.
Because coconut oil is easily absorbed deep into the hair strands, combining it with herbs that colour your hair such as henna means the mixture is absorbed and colours the hair well. And as it enters the strands so deeply, it means your colour will stay vibrant for longer. So ditch the store bought dyes that can damage your hair, and try natural and gently coconut oil instead!
COCONUT OIL HAIR HACKS 9: PROTEIN TREATMENT
Your hair is made up of protein, and having the correct protein balance means it’ll be stronger and less prone to damage. However, a protein overload results in the hair feeling straw like and being brittle. This can be through overusing protein treatments, or simply because some protein treatments are too strong.
Although coconut oil itself isn’t a protein, it can sometimes mimic a protein treatment. This is due to it containing lauric acid, which reinforces the protein structure of the hair. Used sparingly, it will make your hair strong and shiny without the risk of it becoming straw like that comes with stronger protein treatments.
COCONUT OIL HAIR HACKS 10: ‘MEND’ SPLIT ENDS
Last on our list of coconut oil hair hacks is using it for those pesky split ends.
Split ends are a sign of damage to your hair from heat styling, over processing, and just general wear and tear. They occur when damage causes the cuticle to come away, which weakens the strand. Then the strand splits, starting at the bottom and working its way up.
It’s important to know that once your hair is damaged it can’t be undone, and the only real way to get rid of split ends is to cut them off. However it can be hard to say bye to your long locks, particularly if the split ends have made their way up and damaged the lengths of your hair.
Coconut oil can act as a temporary split end fixer. The oil creates a film over the strand, flattening any part of the cuticle that has come away through damage and stopping your hair look as frizzy. But remember this only lasts until your next wash, and once the oil goes the split end will return.
