A lot of the body is made up of water, and making sure it stays hydrated is a crucial part of clear skin. It’s an organ that’s one of the first to stop receiving water when the body is dehydrated, and without water it cannot function properly. This can lead to dry skin that is tight and flakes.

Skin also looses its natural elasticity with age, which makes it harder for water to enter the skin and results in wrinkles. Meaning staying hydrated can actually help your skin look younger.

Be sure to drink water regularly throughout the day for bright youthful looking skin. Take extra care to stay hydrated after drinking alcohol as it dehydrates the body (hence the hangovers), and after eating salty foods which act as a magnet and pull the water out of the cells.

If you’re a serial pimple popper, you might actually be making your skin worse.

Whenever you touch your face, you’re transferring any bacteria and dirt from your fingertips onto your face. So whilst it might not cause spots, if your skin is already congested you could be adding to it. Plus if you’re touching your face it’s likely to be to pop and pick spots, which can lead to scarring.

And that’s just your fingertips. If you’ve got spots around your chin and jawline, it could actually be your beloved phone causing them.

If you’re touching your phone regularly (who isn’t) and there’s any bacteria on your hands, these will be transferred to your phone. And then when you talk on the phone, it’ll be transferred to your face. If you consider that scientists at the University of Arizona found phones are ten times dirtier than a toilet seat, it’s no wonder why it could be making you breakout.

Try touching your face less and wiping down your phone with an antibacterial wipe regularly for clearer skin!

It’s no secret that what you eat can affect your skin. However, very few people take it seriously when trying to clear their skin.

There are plenty of ¬†testimonials online saying how people healed their acne through changing their diet, and as your skin is a reflection of what’s going on inside your body it’s easy to see why. Skip buying the expensive skincare products and start looking into your body and your health instead. Processed food can contain more salt and sugar than you realise, so try cutting down and eating more whole foods.

Many people wear makeup to cover their skin problems, but this could be the very thing contributing to it.

Anything you put on your face can have the potential to cause breakouts, and make-up is no exception. In particular liquid foundations can contribute to bad skin as these can contain oil, which blocks your pores and therefore leads to spots.

The best way to make sure your foundation isn’t causing you to have bad skin is by buying products labelled as non-comedogenic, meaning it is less likely to clog pores and cause breakouts. Or even better is to skip oily foundations just use powder foundation, or have make-up free days and let your skin breathe.

If you’ve got bad skin, it can be tempting to start overloading on products and start washing your face with strong cleansers to remove all the oil. This could actually be causing your skin to break out even more.

When you use a strong cleanser, it removes the oils from your skin. Yes it removes the excess oils, but it also strips your natural oils from your face. This leaves your skin tight and dry, and causes your skin to overcompensate and produce even more oil. That’s right- washing your skin could actually be making it oilier!

Make sure to use a gentle cleanser that only removes excess oil and doesn’t leave your skin feeling dry or tight. And skip cleansing twice a day; once is plenty.
